Lebanon charges al-Qaeda cell in church bomb

Beirut - The Lebanese judiciary charged 31 people with links to al-Qaeda with plotting to attack a church and other Christian religious places in the eastern Bekaa valley close to the Syrian border, judicial sources said. The cell was also charged with possessing illegal weapons, including rockets, and forging documents. According to judicial sources, death sentences were recommended for 14 of them. Eighteen of the suspects, among them Lebanese, Syrians and a Saudi, were arrested in the past two months. The group was led by a Saudi national called Abu Ahmed, the sources said. Most of the suspects were arrested when the Lebanese Army was fighting pitched battles with a fundamentalist group called Fatah al- Islam in northern Lebanon during the summer. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
