Poland's Tusk wants to end military mission to Iraq in 2008

Warsaw - Donald Tusk, the liberal candidate for the post as Poland's new government leader on Tuesday said he wants to end his country's military mission to Iraq next year. 'We want - and I underline this with great emphasis, - with the understanding of our most important ally, the United States, to redraft our presence in Iraq,' Tusk said in Warsaw. As election victors, his party aims to end the mission's 'military character' in 2008, he said. Tusk, who heads the liberal Civic Platform (PO), and who is to succeed Jaroslaw Kaczynski, who stepped down as prime minister on Monday, was in talks with President Lech Kaczynski this week on the formation of a new government. Polish military units have been involved with the intervention in Iraq since 2003. Twenty-two Polish soldiers have died since.
