Riyadh and Baghdad to discuss handover of Saudi detainees

Riyadh - Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayyif bin Abdul- Aziz said a meeting with Iraqi officials would be soon held over Saudis detained in Iraq, the kingdom's official news agency reported Wednesday. Speaking in Kuwait following a meeting of interior ministers of Iraq's neighbouring countries as well as Egypt and Bahrain, Prince Nayyif said his ministry did not know the exact number of Saudi detainees in Iraq. Iraq's national security advisor, Muwafak al-Rubai, said in July that over 160 Saudis stood trial in Iraq and hundreds of them are awaiting trial. Hundreds of - mainly Islamist - Arab nationals illegally enter Iraq to be part of what they perceive as a jihad (holy war) against US-led foreign troops that invaded the country in 2003. US army figures indicate that 45 per cent of non-Iraqis fighting the US coalition in Iraq are Saudis. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
