Damascus - A foreign ministry source rejected Monday as a 'military nonsense' a report by an anti-Syria Lebanese newspaper claiming that Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem had met Israeli officials in Washington.
In a statement faxed to Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, the source, which was not identified, blamed the recent report by al-Mustaqbal newspaper on 'misleading and malign' attempts by some Lebanese political parties.
Syria has repeatedly voiced its rejection of secret negotiations with Israel and demanded that Israel clearly and unequivocally announce its readiness to give back the Golan Heights as a condition for the resumption of peace talks with the Jewish state.
Peace talks between Syria and Israel deadlocked in 2000. The Lebanese government is split in its attitude to Syria, with anti- Syria Lebanese blaming Syria for the 2005 assassination of Lebanese Premier Rafik Hariri.
