Syrian-based Palestinian group criticizes Hamas, Fatah

Damascus - The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) criticized Saturday measures taken by both Hamas and Fatah and urged the two rival groups to work for calm to preserve the national interests of the Palestinian people. The PFLP condemned in a statement emailed to Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa in Damascus the Hamas movement's takeover of the Gaza Strip 'and what has accompanied it - rejected practices that are alien to our people's tradition and ethical values.' 'In all ways, this military takeover is harmful and futile and does not take into considerations the delicate and complicated repercussions it would have on our people. It would open the door widely for negative foreign interference,' it said. The Damascus-based group also criticized Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas for setting up an emergency Fatah-dominated government after dissolving a unity government with Hamas on Thursday. 'This armed extremism should not be countered by hasty political reactions ... This would further deepen and prolong the current crisis,' it said. The PFLP urged all parties to form a temporary national leadership combining all Islamic and national forces 'to be a prelude to a national and comprehensive dialogue to handle seriously and responsibly' the current crisis. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
