Jordan's Abdullah calls Abbas, urges steps to halt bloodshed

Amman - King Abdullah II of Jordan on Thursday called Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and urged taking all steps that ensure an 'immediate' halt for Palestinian bloodshed, the royal court said. 'The monarch called for taking all measures that ensure an immediate halt to Palestinian bloodshed and letting dialogue to prevail with a view to preserving the unity of the Palestinian people,' a court statement said. The king warned that the continuation of fighting between Abbas' Fatah movement and the radical Hamas group 'will have dangerous repercussions on the future of the Palestinian question'. In a related development, the Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit discussed the situation earlier in the day with the Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister Azzam al-Ahmad, a Fatah leader, who visited Amman to brief the Jordanian government on the escalating situation in the Gaza Strip. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
