Iranian cleric proposes establishment of matchmaking-centres

Tehran - An Iranian cleric on Friday proposed establishing matchmaking-centres in the country for the youth, Fars news agency reported. 'The country needs centres for selecting marriage partners for the youth. It is one of the major necessities of the Iranian society,' said Ebrahim Amini during Friday prayers in Qom, south of Tehran. Due to social restrictions in Iran and segregation of men and women in most public areas, young people have few opportunities to become acquainted with each other. Most couples are introduced to each other by family members or relatives, but are not aware until after marriage whether they are compatible. The resulting problems have led, according to official statistics, to increasing divorces rate in recent years, especially in urban areas. 'The officials should try to solve all problems by removing the relevant hurdles and implementing the (matchmaking) project,' Amini said. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
