Syria urges Hamas and Fatah to halt fighting

Damascus - Syria on Saturday strongly denounced Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City and urged the two rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah to adhere to national unity. 'Syria condemns, with the strongest phrases, this US-backed Israeli terrorism and calls on the Palestinian brothers to end differences and stick to national unity,' Tishrin government newspaper said in an editorial. Israeli airstrikes hit Saturday two suspected Hamas rocket workshops at a time when sporadic gunfire erupted in Gaza City overnight between Hamas and Fatah, whose weeklong fighting has left more than 50 Palestinians dead. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
