Jordan journalists syndicate urges release of BBC Gaza reporter

Amman - The Jordan Press Association (JPA) on Monday urged the speedy release of the abducted BBC correspondent in Gaza, Alan Johnston, saying his March 12 disappearance represented a 'violation' of the press freedom. 'Johnston's continued detention represents a violation of the freedom of press and the rule of law and extends a service to the Israeli occupation forces which commit the ugliest crimes against the Palestinian people,' the JPA said in a statement. 'Every day that passes without his release will only increase his sufferings, endanger his life and gravely offend the Palestinian people and their just cause,' it added. The Jordanian journalists syndicate urged the Palestinian government 'to do its utmost to ensure the release of Johnston and to conduct an investigation with those who committed this unjustifiable act that runs counter to all conventions, values, human rights and the sacred message of journalism.' © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
