EU to monitor talks between Olmert and Abbas: report

Berlin - The European Union is to monitor talks between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, in a concession wrung from Olmert by German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her recent visit, according to a news report. The German news magazine Der Spiegel reported Friday that Olmert had agreed in confidential talks with Merkel to make concessions to the Palestinian side. According to the unsourced report, Merkel had warned Olmert and Abbas that repeated meetings without progress would be counterproductive. Der Spiegel said Israel had pledged to ease restrictions on Palestinians at its military control points on several occasions, but that these commitments had come to nothing. According to the report, Olmert also agreed to moderate his criticism of Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora and to implement the clearing of illegal Jewish settlements on the West Bank. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
