Former Iraqi vice president Ramadan executed (1st Lead)

Baghdad - Former Iraqi vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan was executed early Tuesday four years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, al-Iraqiya television reported quoting government officials. Ramadan, who served in former leader Saddam Hussein's regime, was sentenced to death on February 12 for his role in the 1982 killing of 148 Shiites in Dujail, after a failed attempt on Saddam's life. An Iraqi appeal tribunal on Thursday upheld the death penalty against Ramadan for genocide, and Iraqi law requires him to be executed within 30 days. Saddam and two of his former aides have already been hanged for their roles in the same crime. Reports Monday said Ramadan was set to be buried next to Saddam. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
