Jordan's corruption cases up by 38 per cent in 2006

Amman - Corruption cases discovered in Jordan rose by 38 per cent in 2006, to 456, from 330 cases in 2005, the Anti-Corruption Department announced Monday. The ACD said that 10 of the cases were referred to the State Security Court, 92 to the public prosecutors while 333 cases were handled by administrative governors. A total of 248 persons were involved in the corruption practices, which ranged between bribery and abuse of trust to fraud, forged documents, embezzlement and counterfeit currency. The ACD also foiled 21 drug trafficking attempts that involved 115 people who belonged to Jordanian and foreign nationalities. The ACD, which is attached to the General Intelligence Department, attributed the rise in the number of discovered corruption cases to enhanced efficiency of security organs. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
