Fatah gunmen attack Hamas minister's convoy in West Bank

Ramallah - A group of Fatah gunmen Saturday attacked a convoy in the northern West Bank carrying a minister of the rival Hamas movement, eyewitnesses said. The convoy, carrying Palestinian Authority Minister of Prisoners' Affairs Wasfi Kabaha, was attacked in the town of Tubas, near Jenin. Witnesses said the gunmen fired in the air and blocked the movement of the minister's car. Kabaha was on his way to inaugurate a new office for the ministry of education in the town. Activists from the Islamic Hamas movement, to which the minister belongs, engaged in a fist fight with the Fatah gunmen. The brawl ended after Palestinian police intervened. Hamas condemned the incident saying in a statement that Fatah and Hamas are close to concluding a national unity government that would end months of hostilities between the two largest Palestinian parties. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
