Baghdad- At least 75 people were killed Saturday and 125 wounded in a series of bomb blasts in Shiite areas across Iraq on the day the country's former president Saddam Hussein was hanged for crimes against humanity. Three car bombs exploded in separate Shiite districts in the capital Baghdad, leaving at least 45 people dead and 75 others wounded, Iraqi officials said. Earlier in the day, 30 people were killed and 50 wounded in a bomb blast in a market in the town of Kufa, about 150 kilometres south of Baghdad. The attack took place on a market in the predominantly Shiite town, the news channel al-Arabiya reported, citing medical sources. A police source said the bomb was planted on a bus and the security forces had managed to detain the attacker. Many of the victims were women and children. Kufa, a centre of Shiite Muslim pilgrimage, is a small town 170 kilometres south of Baghdad. It was unclear whether the attacks were linked to the execution of Saddam Hussein. In other news, the US military said that one of its soldiers was killed in a roadside bomb attack on Friday and three marines died from wounds they sustained during fighting in the western province of Anbar. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
