Basra raid may trigger revenge attacks against Danish forces

Copenhagen - The commander of the Danish contingent in southern Iraq said Friday he could not rule out possible revenge attacks against Danish forces after five suspected local rebel leaders were arrested in an overnight raid. Some 250 Danish soldiers joined 750 British troops in the overnight sweep in Harta, a suburb of Basra. Danish forces, some 530-strong, have in recent months been attacked on several occasions while on patrol in Harta. The Danish forces operate in the British sector of southern Iraq. The Danish military command said the Danish forces were not fired on during the overnight operation. Troops seized firearms, rockets and several roadside bombs in connection with the sweep. Colonel Per Mikkelsen told public broadcaster DR that he expected the threat of attacks against Danish forces to reduce in the long- term but in the short-term he said he could not rule out revenge attacks. One of the five suspected rebel leaders was later released while the others were handed over to judicial authorities. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
