Jordan issues ultimatum to 29 bank fraud fugitives to turn in

Amman - Jordan's State Security Court (SSC) Saturday gave 29 defendants accused of involvement in the Philadelphia Bank fraud 10 days to turn themselves over to the judicial authorities, otherwise their properties would be placed under the government's custody. Among the fugitives are four Britons, an American, five Syrians, eight Iraqis and three Lebanese. The court's chief Colonel Sobhi Mawas urged the defendants 'to turn themselves over to the judicial authorities, otherwise their property will be placed under the government's custody and all of their legal actions will be considered null and void,' a SSC statement said. The suspects are among 43 people and firms accused of embezzlement and fraud involving 170 million dollars that pushed the Philadelphia Bank to the brink of bankruptcy three days ago. They include former chairman of the Philadelphia Bank Issa Kazemi, the bank's general manager Mohammad Shennar and three of its former senior employees. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
