Iranian judiciary releases detained academic

Tehran - The Iranian judiciary on Wednesday released Iranian academic Ramin Jahanbeglu after a four-month detainment, the Fars news agency reported. A spokesman of the Iranian prisons organization confirmed Jahanbeglu's release, Fars reported. Jahanbeglu had been accused by the country's intelligence service of having spied for the United States with the aim of toppling the ruling Islamic system through a 'soft revolution in Iran.' He was arrested on April 27 at Tehran's airport as he was about to leave for Vienna. The European Union had several times expressed concern over the fate of the Canadian-Iranian. Tehran however dismissed this as interference in Iran's internal affairs. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
