Post offices launch HIV education programme

Geneva - The United Nations joint task force on AIDS said Tuesday it was teaming up with national postal services and labour groups to launch a new programme aimed at educating people about HIV prevention. The campaign would involve 16,000 post offices in seven countries distributing information to employees and clients. According to UNAIDS, there are 7,400 new HIV infections daily around the world, in large part due to ignorance about the virus and prevention methods. Post offices in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, China, Estonia, Mali and Nigeria have said they will participate in the campaign, set to last until 2011. At the campaign's conclusion, the UN will call on national postal services to issue postage stamps to mark 30 years since the discovery of AIDS in 1981. The programme is being carried out in coordination with other UN agencies, including the Universal Postal Union and the International Labour Organization, as well trade unions.
