Number of swine-flu infections approaches 200 in Japan

Tokyo - The number of patients in Japan infected with the H1N1 strain of influenza, commonly known as swine flu, inched Wednesday toward the 200 mark. The confirmed infections have risen to 196 since an initial four cases were discovered early this month in travellers returning from Canada via the United States. North American countries have been the hardest hit in the H1N1 outbreak. Japan on Wednesday also confirmed its first swine-flu case outside the prefectures of Osaka and Hyogo, Japanese media reports said. The infected patient, a man in his 20s in Shiga prefecture, had visited Kobe in Hyogo prefecture last weekend. Most cases to date have involved schoolchildren and teachers. Hundreds of schools remained closed.
