Tokyo - Japanese airports increased the number of quarantine officials Tuesday as a crowd of travelers returned home during the Golden Week holidays.
The government tripled the number of doctors and nurses at three major airports in Japan to test travelers for the new type of influenza, commonly known as swine flu.
There have been no reported cases of the new flu strain in Japan.
The three airports receive direct flights from North America, with Narita International Airport being the one to receive direct flights from Mexico.
About 280 medical staff conducted health checks on passengers at Narita during the week-long holiday that lasts through Wednesday, according to Kyodo News Agency.
The number of travelers returning from vacation was expected to exceed 46,000 Wednesday.
