Hygienic conditions important for body piercings, tattoos

Berlin - People planning to have a body piercing or tattoo should pay careful attention to hygienic conditions in the studio, advised Prevention Campaign Skin, a skin health programme launched last year in Berlin by a group of about 100 German public health insurance companies and accident insurers. The group said that strict hygienic conditions lowered the risk of infections by germs and viruses. More specifically, it noted that the treatment room should be clean and separated from other rooms. And the piercing or tattoo artist should thoroughly inform clients about proper care, possible risks and aftereffects. Gloves and sterilely packaged, disposable materials also protected against infections, the group said. Good hygiene remains important after a piercing as well. During the healing phase, only disinfected fingers should touch the piece of body art, and visits to the sauna, tanning studio or swimming pool are not advisable. As many as 30 per cent of all piercings and tattoos result in complications, experts say, including long-lasting infections, painful inflammations, and allergic reactions.
