Male obesity contributes to fertility problems

Barcelona, Spain - Overweight can contribute to fertility problems in men, scientists said Wednesday in Barcelona, Spain. Research shows that obese men have less seminal fluid and more sperm abnormalities than men of normal weight, Ghiyath Shayeb of Aberdeen University said at the 24th annual conference of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology. Overweight was known to be a risk factor in women wanting to conceive, but Shayeb recommended that men also try to lose extra weight before trying to have a baby. Shayeb based his conclusions on a study of 5,316 men attending a fertility centre in Aberdeen, Britain. Diabetes also has an effect on male fertility, said Con Mallidis of Queen University in Belfast, explaining that the disease caused DNA damage in sperm. Scientists are trying to develop strategies to protect sperm in diabetes patients, such as changes in diet. One sixth of couples all over the world are estimated to suffer from some type of fertility problem, experts said, explaining that 2 per cent of European babies are already conceived with the help of fertility treatments.
