US stores restock spinach after scare passes

San Francisco - Spinach was back on the menu in the US Tuesday after the Food and Drug Administration lifted a ban on the leafy greens that had been tainted by E Coli bacteria. Three people were reported to have died from eating tainted spinach and almost 200 fell sick due across the US to the bacteria. The outbreak prompted authorities last week to issue a recommendation against eating spinach, which was made famous as a source of iron and vitamins by the cartoon character Popeye. But the advisory was lifted after government investigators traced all the tainted leaves back to a company in central California's Salinas Valley. That company, Natural Selection, produces spinach for three brands and its produce remains under warning, the FDA said in a statement. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
