From Monsters and Critics.com Europe News Belgrade - The United States on Monday welcomed the election victory by Serbia's pro-Western parties and pledged to work with reformers to help guide the country toward the European Union. 'The Serbian electorate has clearly demonstrated that its heart is in Europe,' a US Embassy statement said. 'Serbia's citizens have spoken out in favour of a prosperous future inside the Western community.' Serbian President Boris Tadic's pro-European bloc won the most votes in Sunday's parliamentary elections, but fell short of an outright majority in the 250-seat Belgrade assembly. The result left anti-Western and ultra-nationalist parties, together with the late Slobodan Milosevic's party, with enough seats to form a government. Coalition talks began on Monday. The US government is 'determined to remain engaged with reformers' to help fulfil 'the promise of October 2000,' when mass demonstrations toppled Milosevic after a decade of war in the Balkans, the embassy said. © Copyright 2007 by monstersandcritics.com.
