Thousands visit Belgrade Book Fair

Belgrade - A record 140,000 people visited the annual 54th Belgrade Book Fair, which closed Sunday, officials said. Some 800 publishers from 24 countries exhibited at the week long fair, including publishers from Greece - this year's guest country - and Sweden, which is set to be next year's guest of honor. The bigger space and better organization helped make the event a success, said Andjelko Trpkovic, the head of the Belgrade Fair complex where the Book Fair is held every year. 'In future, we will work on the internationalization of the fair and strengthening its regional importance,' Trpkovic told reporters in Belgrade. Despite the high attendance, the booksellers still complained that sales were still affected by the global economic crisis. 'It could have been better. The first three days were very slow, but the weekend was better,' once small local publisher said. Visitors were however happy with the discounts. 'I got the entire Twilight series at a very good price,' one teenage girl said holding the bestselling vampire books by Stephenie Meyer.
