Merkel to meet Medvedev at host city for 2014 Winter Olympics

Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to meet Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on August 14 in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi, a German government spokesman confirmed Wednesday. The trip, following an invitation from Medvedev during the leaders' meeting in Munich last month, is to focus on international topics, including the economic crisis. The visit will come almost one year after Merkel and Medvedev's last meeting in Sotchi, at the height of the last summer's five-day war between Russia and Georgia. Tension has recently been mounting in Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia, as the anniversary of last year's war draws close. A government spokesman refused to say whether a Russian-backed bid for General Motors' (GM) European subsidy Opel might conclude successfully ahead of next week's meeting. Russian state-owned Sherbank is backing Austrian-Canadian car parts manufacturer Magna in negotiations with GM over the future of German-based Opel, alongside a rival bidder, Bruxelles-based investment house RHJ International. Russia is hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, at the foothills of the Caucasus mountains.
