EU expresses "deep concern" over Honduras (Roundup)

Stockholm - The European Union on Thursday expressed 'deep concern' over the political crisis in Honduras where President Manuel Zelaya was ousted in a coup on Sunday. The EU urged 'all relevant parties and institutions to refrain from violence and to strive to find a swift and peaceful solution to the current situation,' an EU council presidency statement said. All EU ambassadors have left the Central American country, the statement added. Sweden on Wednesday took over the rotating six-month presidency of the 27-nation bloc. The coup has been criticized by, among others, the United Nations and the Organization of American States (OAS). The statement said the EU backed 'the efforts made by the Organization of American States ... for a peaceful solution aimed at restoring the constitutional order' and reinstating Zelaya.
