Life term for German who killed woman motorist by dropping log

Oldenburg, Germany - A German court jailed Nikolai H, 31, for life Wednesday for dropping a log off a highway bridge at night- time so that it smashed into a speeding car and killed a woman occupant. The young mother's sudden, motiveless death at the hands of an anonymous killer on her way home from a beach holiday shocked Germany last year and highlighted a string of similar but non-fatal attacks by juvenile delinquents. The log smashed through the windscreen of the family's car, killing the mother almost instantly. Her husband and two children survived the March 23, 2008, accident near the city of Oldenburg. With no witnesses, police spent weeks hunting the killer. In the Oldenburg court, H denied the killing and refused to testify, but judges chose to believe an admission he made under police interrogation. They convicted him of murder, three counts of attempted murder and dangerously interfering with traffic. The man, who was a heroin addict, told police he dropped the log off an overpass into the stream of traffic out of a sense of anger and boredom. H's full surname was not disclosed in line with German media privacy guidelines.
