Lisbon Treaty clears Czech Senate (1st Lead)

Prague - The European Union's stalled reform pact, the Lisbon Treaty, cleared another hurdle Wednesday on its lengthy ratification in the Czech Republic, as the parliament's upper house approved it. The Senate passed the treaty 54-20 in a triumphant farewell for outgoing Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, a reluctant supporter of the pact, whose cabinet is planned to quit on Friday. Five senators abstained from the vote and two were not present. Three-fifths of present senators, or 48 from the attending 79, were needed for the pact's approval. The ratification requires a signature by pact's opponent, Czech President Vaclav Klaus, and could be further dragged out by his followers in the Senate, who hope to put it to a court review.
