Trial of 14 suspected Islamists begins in Spain

Madrid - A trial began Monday in Spain of 14 suspects charged with belonging to a militant Islamist network that recruited people for suicide attacks in Iraq. The so-called Tigris network was believed to have been based in a flat in Santa Coloma de Gramanet near Barcelona. The accused indoctrinated recruits and helped them travel to Iraq, according to charges presented at Madrid's National Court. They also allegedly lent logistical support to several people suspected of involvement in the 2004 Madrid train bombings, who had fled after the attack that claimed 191 lives. Some of the Madrid bombings suspects are believed to have died in Iraq. The accused were suspected of having links with similar groups in other European countries, Turkey, Syria, Morocco, Algeria, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan. Prosecutors were requesting sentences of up to 14 years in prison.
