Probe underway into Swedish amusement park accident

Stockholm - Police and an accident commission in Sweden have launched a probe into the cause of an accident at an amusement park in Gothenburg which saw 30 people taken to hospitals when a ride collapsed. Three people remained in hospital Wednesday, two of whom sustained pelvic industries in the accident Tuesday, Sahlgrenska University Hospital spokeswoman Ann-Christine Anderssson told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa. One of the three was likely to be discharged later in the day, she said. In all 36 people were on the ride when it collapsed at the Liseberg amusement park in the west-coast city of Gothenburg. Some 30 people, including several members of a Norwegian football team taking part in the ongoing Gothia Cup youth football tournament, were taken to various hospitals in the Gothenburg region. Others were treated for shock at the scene. The ride, constructed in 1983, has a capacity of 40 people. The amusement park - the largest in Scandinavia with some 30 rides - remained open after the accident, but a section was closed off to allow rescue workers access to the victims.
