European Union force searches home of war crime's suspect Karadzic

Sarajevo - Soldiers of the European Union Force (EUFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday searched the house of the most wanted Bosnian Serb war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic, EUFOR said in a statement. The operation, according to the statement, was conducted at the residence of Karadzic's wife Ljiljana Zelen Karadzic at their home in Pale, some 20 kilometres south-east of the capital Sarajevo at the request of The Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). EUFOR said the operation was aimed at establishing 'what links and support the Karadzic family has with Radovan Karadzic, as well as identifying asset ownership, including of the house itself.' 'The search was for material and/or information that could assist the ICTY in the ongoing search for and capture of persons indicted by the tribunal and putting pressure on networks believed to be involved in protecting these persons,' said EUFOR. It added that 'useful information was gathered from the scene and taken for analysis.' Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic remains at large nearly 13 years after the ICTY indicted him for war crimes, genocide, crimes against humanity and severe breaches of the Geneva Conventions during the 1992-95 war in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Karadzic's whereabouts remain unknown.
