Prague doesn't see constitutional issues with Lisbon treaty

Prague - The Czech government doesn't foresee a problem concerning the compatibility of the European Union's Lisbon treaty with the country's constitution, reports said Sunday. Europe Minister Alexandr Vondra told the CTK news agency that the government position based on the advice of legal experts is that the treaty is in harmony with the Czech constitution. The government of Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek will shortly seek a judgement from the Czech Constitutional Court to see if the treaty is in accordance with Czech law, Radio Prague reported. However, he said he didn't expect the treaty to come into force in the 27-member bloc within the next 12 months. Ireland rejected the treaty aimed at streamlining the bloc in a referendum earlier this month. Czech President Vaclav Klaus described the treaty as 'failed' after the Irish no vote. The Czech Republic hasn't yet ratified the treaty. Topolanek has said the parliamentary ratification process would continue once the Czech Constitutional Court has ruled.
