Kosovo police seize 10 kilos of heroin, arrest five

Pristina - Kosovo police said Sunday they seized 10 kilos of heroin and arrested five persons believed involved in international drug smuggling from the Balkans to Western Europe. Police spokesperson Veton Elshani said the heroin was found Saturday in two cars with Swiss licence plates. 'An investigation conducted for more than five months lead us to this seizure. We believe that this is one of the most powerful international drug chains in Kosovo,' Veton Elshani told reporters. The vehicles were intercepted in the eastern part at the Kosovo- Serbia border crossing near to Bujanovac. One of the vehicles had three children on board. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February and was recognized by major European and Western powers. Serbia and Russia oppose the moved. International agencies fighting the drug trade warn that Kosovo has become a 'smugglers paradise', supplying up to 40 per cent of heroin sold in Europe and North America.
