Amsterdam to shrink its Red Light District

Amsterdam - The Amsterdam municipality will close a substantial number of brothels and nightclubs in the famous Red Light District located in the old city centre. At a press conference on Monday, alderman Lodewijk Asscher said that within the next few years the city wants to upgrade the area adjacent to the Amsterdam central station and the entrance to the old city. The idea is to replace sex clubs with regular venues, theatres and residential homes. Mayor Job Cohen stressed that the capital does not want to abolish prostitution - which is legal in the Netherlands - but wants to reduce the number of window brothels and low quality cafes. The plan is part of a larger facelift the old city centre is currently undergoing. A new metro line is being built under the historic old city using innovative engineering methods, also altering the road infrastructure in the area surrounding the central station. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
