Dutch prepare for major storm, coast closed

Amsterdam - The Dutch coast guard was on alert on Thursday for what was expected to be the biggest storm since 1976. With wind speeds of more than 100 kilometres per hour, the sea waves were expected to be up to ten metres high. Thursday afternoon the coast guard began patrolling most dikes along the Dutch North See coast to ensure they would be able to resist the record-high sea water waves predicted by the KNMI, the Dutch national meteorological institute. According to the meteorologists, the last time the Netherlands suffered a similar storm that put the whole coast guard on high alert, was in January 1976. The north-western storm expected for Thursday night would cause extremely high water levels along the Dutch North Sea coast, but experts say the condition of the Dutch dikes is such that no floods are to be expected. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
