Five held in Politkovskaya protest are released in Russia (Roundup)

Moscow - Five foreign human rights activists arrested Saturday on the sidelines of a planned memorial conference for the Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya were released later. The five - three Spaniards, a Briton and a female German employee of Amnesty International - had been suspected of violating registration regulations, a police spokesman in the city of Nizhny Novgorod was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying. The authorities in the city on the River Volga had earlier put a stop to a human rights conference in memory of Politkovskaya, a fierce critic of the government who was killed in Moscow a year ago. Russian organizations complained that the authorities had prevented the conference by repressing the organizers. Politkovskaya was shot dead in front of her flat in Moscow on October 7, 2006. Her colleagues have complained that the Russian judicial authorities have been holding back investigations into the case. Opposition supporters and friends of the killed journalist plan to hold a demonstration Sunday morning in Moscow to call for an objective clarification of the case. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
