Spanish beaches reopened after shark alert

Murcia, Spain - Several beaches which had been closed over the presence of a shark were to be reopened Friday in south-eastern Spain, emergency coordinators said. Rescuers, guards and biologists gave up the search for the tiger shark, which had been sighted at 20 metres off San Javier near Murcia. The shark was estimated to weigh 50 kilos and to be 1.5 metres long. The shark was the second sighted near Spanish beaches within two weeks. A shark measuring 1.60 metres was captured near Tarragona and died in an aquarium. It turned out to have swallowed two fishing hooks. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
