Shark alarm on Spanish beach

Murcia, Spain - Several beaches have been closed in south-eastern Spain after a shark was sighted at less than 15 metres off shore, emergency coordinators said. The mako shark seen in La Manga del Manor near Murcia was estimated to be 1.5 metres long. Officials described the closure as a short-term cautionary measure. The shark 'is probably more afraid of us than we of it,' said Fernando Postigo, an expert in charge of beach security. The shark was the second sighted near Spanish beaches within two weeks. A shark measuring 1.60 metres was captured near Tarragona and died in an aquarium. It turned out to have swallowed two fishing hooks. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
