Albanian Parliament again fails to choose a president

Tirana, Albania - The Albanian Parliament failed late Sunday to elect a president to serve as head of state. It was the third attempt by the Parliament in Tirana to elect a president, without success. In a secret ballot, Bamir Topi, nominee of the governing, conservative majority, got 75 votes, while socialist opposition candidate Fatos Nano received just three votes. Amid an opposition boycott, only 80 of the Parliament's 140 members participated in the vote, short of the 84 required to elect a president. A two-thirds majority of the chamber is required to make the vote valid. Current president Alfred Moisiu has been in office since July 2004. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
