Reduced jail for Kurd who ran cash for Iraq terror group

Stuttgart, Germany - A 37-year-old Iraqi Kurd who admitted smuggling funds to the terrorist group Ansar al-Islam was assured Friday of a reduced jail term after he admitted the charge in a German court. Sentence has yet to be passed at the trial in the southern German city of Stuttgart, but judges said they had agreed with the prosecution and defence that the defendant was not gravely culpable. That formula would mean a sentence of no more than 33 months for the man, who has spent one year in pre-trial custody. Supporting a terrorist group is punishable by up to 10 years in jail in Germany. The man told the court he had taken the money to Switzerland and passed it on to Iraq on behalf of Ata R, another Iraqi who is currently facing a separate trial in Stuttgart for alleged attempted murder. He said he guessed R might be a member of Ansar al-Islam but did not know for sure. Police caught him after tapping R's telephone. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
