Napoleon's sword fetches record 4.8 million euros at auction

Paris - A sword worn by Napoleon Bonaparte during the Battle of Marengo fetched 4.81 million euros (6.45 million dollars) at auction on Sunday, the French auction house Osenat de Fontainebleau said. According to auction specialist Bernard Croissy, the price is a world's record for a souvenir of Napoleon and also for a weapon. Croissy also said the sword was bought by a descendant of Napoleon's youngest brother, Jerome. Designated as a historic artifact, the sword had been appraised at being worth between 1.2 and 1.5 million euros. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
