Renamed Belgrade street defaced with pro-Mladic posters

Belgrade - Supporters of Serbia's most wanted war crimes suspect have plastered posters bearing his image in a Belgrade street just recently renamed in honour of the country's slain pro-Western premier, local media said Tuesday. The posters read 'Ratko Mladic Boulevard,' demonstrating further support in Serbia for the Bosnian Serb general wanted for genocide over crimes such as the Srebrenica massacre in 1995. The incident comes four days after local officials renamed the street after late prime minister Zoran Djindjic, and two days before the organized crime court is expected to deliver verdicts on the dozen men accused of his 2003 murder. The street, originally named Boulevard Avnoja, is located in the modern, business-oriented neighbourhood of New Belgrade. Belgrade's inability to arrest war crime suspects, above all Mladic, prompted the EU to suspend association talks with Serbia over a year ago. Officials of The Hague-based UN war crimes court continue to claim that Mladic, who has been in hiding for over 10 years, is currently located within Serbia's borders. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
