Germany finishes southern Afghan road without insurgent attack

Kabul - A 4.5-kilometre road, Germany's largest reconstruction project in southern Afghanistan, has been completed without incident in the restive province of Kandahar, a German official said Tuesday. The constructions was finished in three months without any interference from insurgents, said Hans-Hermann Dube, regional director of GTZ International Services of the German government-owned Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit, which works on international projects aimed at political, economic, ecological and social development. 'Not one euro more' was spent on the project than its estimated price of 1 million euros (1.3 million dollars), Dube said in Kabul. The road begins 27 kilometres west of Kandahar City and continues south to the Pandshwai district. It is linked to the highway that runs from Kabul to Kandahar and on to Herat. Pandshwai was again and again the scene of heavy fighting last year between the Taliban and troops with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. Large parts of its infrastructure, including roads, have been destroyed, and the district's primarily rural population could no longer transport their products to markets in the cities. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
