Putin calls for international conference on Mideast (1st Lead)

Amman - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday reiterated his proposal for convening an international conference on the Middle East with the participation of all concerned parties including Syria and Lebanon. 'The initiative, which we launched three years ago, has the aim of finding acceptable solutions for the region's problems,' Putin told a joint press conference with King Abdullah II after their talks at the palace. He noticed that 'many countries so far supported this proposal', which should involve all concerned parties in the region, including Syria, Lebanon and the Palestinians. Putin is due to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas later Tuesday to discuss the Russian initiative and the Mecca agreement, reached last Thursday with Saudi brokerage between the Fatah and Hamas groups. Putin said that his Russia's policy on the Middle East gave 'priority' to ensuring stability, security and peace in the region.
