Amsterdam - New residential buildings in the metropolitan area of Rotterdam will be equipped with wind turbines on their rooftops, it was announced Thursday.
Rotterdam's municipality and the Woonbron housing corporation said they had signed a cooperation agreement that included the initiative.
Under it, housing corporations putting up new buildings with a minimum of 32 apartments will be equipped with ten wind turbines designed to provide about a third of each building's energy demands.
The agreement also provided for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by three per cent per year - one per cent more than targeted by the Dutch government and the European Union.
Housing corporations are organisations or foundations owning and developing residential real estate. They provide rent-controlled homes to more than a third of the Dutch population.
