Germany retains top spot in wind power sector

Berlin - Germany retained its position as world leader in the field of wind power in 2005, accounting for 38 per cent of the global turnover of 10.6 billion euros (13.1 billion dollars). Exports of wind turbines climbed 55 per cent over the previous year to 2.9 billion euros, while domestic sales rose 11 per cent to 1.16 billion euros, according to the German Wind Energy Association. 'We expect similarly good prospects for 2006 because the export market is continuing to grow,' according to Norbert Giese, a wind power specialist with the German Electrical Engineering Association. Germany's main market for exports was the United States, followed by Europe. Some 5 per cent of Germany's domestic energy needs are met by wind power, a figure which could grow to 20 per cent by 2020, according to Ralf Bischof, managing director of the German Association of Wind Power. Experts predict wind power and other renewable sources of energy such as solar and geothermal could account for 25 per cent of Germany's electricity in the next 15 years.
