Norwegian gas production at record high, expected to increase

Oslo - Gas production from the Norwegian continental shelf reached record levels in 2006 while oil production dropped, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate said Friday. Last year 26 exploration wells were operated of which four revealed finds, the agency said in its annual summary of activities on the shelf. Directorate head Gunnar Berge said gas production was expected to increase from 86 billion to 90 billion cubic metres during 2007, and in 2011 could surge to 118 billion cubic metres when gas fields like Ormen Lange and Snohvit reached full capacity. Oil production was expected to drop to 2.6 million barrels a day in 2007, down 400,000 barrels a day compared to previous estimates, the agency said. Petroleum and Energy Minister Odd Ragnar Enoksen who attended the presentation said in remarks that the drop was partly due to bottlenecks in production at various fields. During 2007, seven new oil and gas fields were due to come online. Last year was also marked by high prices and lack of rigs - that has been cited as one of the reasons driving plans to merge the oil and gas operations of Norwegian energy groups Statoil and Norsk Hydro. © 2007 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
