Russian firm to construct Bulgaria's second nuclear power plant

Sofia - Bulgaria has appointed the Russian firm Atmostryexport to construct a multi-billion-dollar nuclear power plant at Belene on the Danube, the national power company announced Tuesday. Atomstroyexport's 3.9-billion-euro tender for the project beat a bid from Czech giants Skoda by 1 billion euros. The two 1,000 megawatt light-water reactors would join the existing installations of the same output capacity upstream on the Danube, at Kosloduy. The Kosloduy plant is preparing to terminate two Soviet-era, 440 megawatt reactors before Bulgaria joins the European Union on January 1, 2007. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
