Swedish nuclear shutdown more serious than originally thought

Stockholm - A shutdown at Sweden's Forsmark nuclear reactor last month was described Thursday by Swedish nuclear experts as more serious than at first thought. 'The picture has significantly deteriorated following the clarification of details,' Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate (SKI) head Bjorn Karlsson told SR radio. The failure of two emergency generators after a reactor shut down in July was 'the worst incident in the history of Sweden's nuclear industry,' Karlsson said. Environment Minister Leni Sommerstad said the government would draw practical consequences from Karlsson's evaluation. The SKI had four of Sweden's 10 nuclear reactors shut down after the Forsmark incident. A decision on when to permit the reactors to be restarted would only be made after the investigations into the incident were completed. © 2006 dpa - Deutsche Presse-Agentur
